They have a very detailed write up about their process and how they handle claims and Verifications. I think when a site is handling misinformation and/or information that people are unsure about the truth of, being able to detail the how and why of your process and how you handle such things like partisan issues and such gives validity to your process. Their five factors page does a good job of breaking it into easier to understand steps for someone who wants to learn more or start being critical more about fact checking themselves. In general, I feel that this page is very accessible for those who are just getting started or interested in becoming more aware and more informed about the misinformation around them.

I think this accessibility makes them effective at teaching participants. Just as I was going through these pages, I saw some headlines that I was unaware of or questioned, and this site gave me the answers and made me more informed. In particular, this one about sunscreen that I saw a few weeks back. I saw the headline and believed it without further research, and clearly I got disinformation, and thanks to this site, I now know. I think the idea of being corrected or admitting that we got misinformed can be a hard one to admit for some people, this site does a good job of making the process easier and understandable to those who got duped. It doesn’t try to shame or insult you for being duped, it makes it clear it only wants to educate, and I give them props for that.

I think these factors mentioned above, the accessibility, the ease and explanation, and the understanding of the desire to simply educate make this a great resource. If I wanted to fact check someone for spreading misinformation, this is the kind of site that I think makes people more willing to learn. I think back a lot to the research article we did this week, Facts don’t change minds, It obviously clear that just having the truth and correcting misinformation isn’t going to save us, but I think sites like these, used in conjunction with the four steps mentioned in that research article, are the beginning on the path to correcting misinformation.

I played around a bit with all three of the games offered and decided to go through with the Harmony Square game because it seemed the most accessible to do without a long load list of instructions. I would say this game’s main point it’s getting across is that disinformation and the fake news that we see so rampantly are very organically spread. I think it’s easy in our heads to assume so much of what is happening is very thoroughly thought out and spread from countries like Russia. I think in reality a lot of it is like this, organic and spread through bots. This game does a great job of showing how easy and fast this can spread. After all, most of the internet nowadays is bots.

When it comes to how effective this game is at teaching participants, I am more unsure. I think the game has good intentions, and trying to show the rise and spread of disinformation is an important concept, but I don’t know how much more knowledgeable about the topic I am. I think getting the point across about how this spreads from bots and bad actors is the main point and takeaway, but beyond that, I don’t think I am much more aware or knowledgeable about these topics or how to fight disinformation.

That being said, I do think games of this kind and format are good. I think there are certain demographics who will learn more from this style and way versus just straight up facts on a site. The article from this week reads about social media incentives to curb misinformation related to this. Harmony Square allowing you to share your results on social media also relates to this. These games and such have an important role, and even if maybe I didn’t find full value in it, I think there are others who will find full value and be educated, and the research out there shows that these incentives do help.

I think my final takeaways from this research is that I am just happy these different research methods exist to fight misinformation. I think it’s very easy to feel defeated and overwhelmed by the sheer garbage of bad information just floating around and being used disingenuously on the internet. We have to remember that this fight takes time, and effort and seeing these different ways to educate and teach gives me hope that we will be able to reach people and stop this flow and spread.

["post-61","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
